With over a decade of experience working as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist and a personal lived experience of having low vision, our mission at Going Places is to 'foster independent travel through the exploration of one's world'. I am based in Melbourne (East) and service the Metro Melbourne area.
At Going Places Orientation & Mobility we offer O&M assessment and training to both children and adults of all ages.
Our developmental O&M services focus on children learning concepts about their world through exploration and play. We encourage children to have agency in the way they move by assisting families and care givers to set up regular routines that foster experiential learning and self-determination, as children work to achieve their goals.
Our services to adults focus on using the discovery approach to O&M to enhance a learners conceptual understanding of the environment to build life long travel skills. We partner with your to individually tailor training programs around your goals, session frequency, current skill level and preferred learning/teaching style.
We also offer accessibility training in the use of smartphones to increase your ability to connect with others and use these devices for increased independent travel.
Programs are aimed to offer rewarding experiences to encourage increased independent travel and progression toward your goals. We believe O&M should be fun, challenging and engaging.
Services are funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from the Improved Daily Activity area of the plan.
I have over a decade of experience working as an Orientation & Mobility Specialist and also share a lived experience of having low vision. This experience informs my enthusiasm, knowledge and personal understanding of the clients I have the privilege to support.
I believe in encouraging people who are blind or have low vision to discover a range of skills and attributes that enable free choice in the places we go and how we get there. As a person living with low vision, I am fully aware of the specific challenges independent travel poses as well as important blind and low vision compensatory skills required to overcome these challenges.
I will partner with you and your supporters to become a collaborative team to assist you in reaching your goals. We will explore new travel routes, trial existing and emerging technologies for O&M, consolidate on your current skills and enjoy the freedom of increased independence.
